Activity Name: Seawatch at Rua Reidh, Melvaig near Gairloch Venue: Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve Start Date: 26/08/2020 at 7:00pm Dates: 26/08/2020 Must Book All Dates? Yes Description: We continue our celebration of Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters 2020 with an evening seawatch at Rua Reidh, a point near Gairloch ideal for looking for marine wildlife. We will have a short walk (approximately 2.5km/1.5 miles) followed by some surveying of the waters for seals, dolphins, whales, basking sharks and seabirds. The Ranger will have a spotting scope for you to use and some spare binoculars but please bring your own if you have them. Must Book All Dates? Yes Description: Mole Hill to Mountain is a course in Wester Ross led by the High Life Highland Countryside Rangers. It aims to get those who lack confidence in to the hills through a series of walks which will increase in steepness and duration on each monthly walk. This is not a navigation course, although this and other aspects of mountain safety will be touched upon during some of the walks. Wildlife, geology and history will also be covered, especially on the steep sections to allow for breathers! There are only 12 spaces available and participants must book on to the whole course. The total price is; £75 for budget and full High Life Highland members and £100 for non-members. Those wishing to join the course are expected to be over 18, have moderate fitness and have access to clothes and footwear suitable for hill walking. Walks may vary according to how the group progresses but below is a likely programme. More details about each walk and the course will be sent out to participants on booking. No Description: In partnership with Darach Social Croft and Ewen’s Room, a local mental health and wellbeing charity, we will be delivering a series of six guided walks in and around Strontian. The walks will all be quite gentle and will last between two and two and half hours and include a break for tea or coffee and a biscuit. Each walk will have a theme, where Eilidh-Ann Phillips, our local Highlife Highland Countryside Ranger, and others will share their knowledge with you. Hugh will tell you a little bit about Forest Bathing and other Mindfulness techniques, and support you to try them out. Palaeontologists (scientists who study dinosaurs) need some new recruits to help research this rare and secretive species that has survived in Laide Community Woodland for millions of years. If you are brave enough, sign up and come with the Ranger this October holidays to be part of the dinosaur training. Those who find the dinosaur nest will be given a special award for passing the training. Suitable for families with children aged between 4 and 11. The training in the woodland involves walking 2.5km/1.5miles on good woodland paths. Numbers are limited and booking essential by 4pm on 19th of October. This is a short, low-level and slow walk and celebrates the small things in nature. Yes Description: MiDAS, the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme, is a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training of minibus drivers. This is a Module One: Standard Certificate course Course candidates will learn: • A thorough knowledge of the legal responsibilities of a minibus driver and duty of care • Department for Transport codes of practice in safe carriage of passengers • Good practice in passenger comfort • Health and Safety at work for Drivers • Manoeuvring of vehicles • Defensive Driving techniques • Information on BCT hire policies and procedures • Minibus Fire and Evacuation Candidates must sit a written test paper and undertake a 70 minute on-the-road driving assessment. Once the course requirements have been assessed and satisfactorily passed, each MiDAS certificate is valid for a period of four years from the date of the driving assessment. On completion of this MiDAS Module One course candidates will be eligible to complete Module Two: Accessible Certificate, Half-day course.
