Yes Description: Last year the Ranger team focused on one of our most iconic species, The Golden Eagle. This year we're shining the spotlight on one of our most endangered species, the European Eel. Although not as attractive as the eagle it's in imminent danger, partly because of it's incredible and unique life cycle. Join the Ranger at the Highland Museum of Childhood to learn more about the incredible journey that the eel makes to survive, and the impact modern practices are having on this journey. This talk is not suitable for children younger than eight years old. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is essential. Yes Description: Drive up one of the highest roads in Britain before taking to your feet to climb even higher towards Sgurr a' Chaorachain, a Corbett with spectacular views. We will look out for mountain wildlife and learn about the history of the area. The distance is approximately 7km/4.25mi. This walk is exposed and mountainous. Participants must have good fitness for walking for several hours on rough steep ground. In the event of wintery weather, it will be postponed. Booking essential by 4pm Wednesday 25th February. Yes Description: Ben Shieldaig is only 534 metres high but it looks higher, sitting prominently above the village of Shieldaig in Torridon. Staff from The Woodland Trust will join us. They have recently taken on management of some of the hill and will tell us of their plans for the future to regenerate woodland here. The area is very rich in wildlife from red squirrels to pine martens and both species of eagle can be seen. The views, depending on the clouds, will give us a bird’s-eye look of Shieldaig Island, the Torridon hills, over to the Applecross peninsula and further. This walk is steep and largely off paths on rough ground which may also be boggy! Participants must have good fitness for walking for several hours on this kind of terrain. Suitable for adults only. Must Book All Dates? Yes Description: Mole Hill to Mountain is a course in Wester Ross led by the High Life Highland Countryside Rangers. It aims to get those who lack confidence in to the hills through a series of walks which will increase in steepness and duration on each monthly walk. This is not a navigation course, although this and other aspects of mountain safety will be touched upon during some of the walks. Wildlife, geology and history will also be covered, especially on the steep sections to allow for breathers! There are only 12 spaces available and participants must book on to the whole course. The total price is; £75 for budget and full High Life Highland members and £100 for non-members. Those wishing to join the course are expected to be over 18, have moderate fitness and have access to clothes and footwear suitable for hill walking. Yes Description: MiDAS, the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme, is a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training of minibus drivers. This is a Module One: Standard Certificate course Course candidates will learn: • A thorough knowledge of the legal responsibilities of a minibus driver and duty of care • Department for Transport codes of practice in safe carriage of passengers • Good practice in passenger comfort • Health and Safety at work for Drivers • Manoeuvring of vehicles • Defensive Driving techniques • Information on BCT hire policies and procedures • Minibus Fire and Evacuation Candidates must sit a written test paper and undertake a 70 minute on-the-road driving assessment. Once the course requirements have been assessed and satisfactorily passed, each MiDAS certificate is valid for a period of four years from the date of the driving assessment. On completion of this MiDAS Module One course candidates will be eligible to complete Module Two: Accessible Certificate, Half-day course.
